Capturing the Craft of Calligraphy in New York City

Cursive writing has been declining for decades. Students in most states are no longer required to learn cursive writing in school. Pens and liquid inks are competing with keyboards and printers. In New York City, a small community of calligraphers remains, among them are Rita Polidori O’Brien and Chisato Uno. They are keeping cursive writing alive in our increasingly digital world. They’ve carved out a niche for themselves and are in demand by high-end clients: producing calligraphy for weddings, events, and luxury brands including Loro Piana, Chanel, Jones Road Beauty, Bloomingdale’s, and Tiffany’s and Co.
